Over The Range Microwave Installation
|
For an over the range microwave installation, the first thing to note is that there must be at least 30" between stove top and bottom of cabinet. Most likely there will be a range hood above your stove, and an electrical wire also for the hood.
The first thing to do is to disconnect the electricity to the range hood, and that is done at the breaker box. Test to make sure that the electricity is off, by attempting to turn on the range hood. After verifying the power is turned off, next take off the range hood. After it is removed, the electrical wire will be exposed - that you will need for the microwave oven. You can do this in either of two ways. A wire can be run from breaker to microwave, for this you will need to have access from the breaker to under the kitchen floor. Another approach will be to run a wire to the cabinet above the microwave froman outlet near by. If a new circuit is needed, both 20 amp breaker and a 12 wire will have to be used. A single gang type junction box should be used. In the lower cabinet right above the stove, at the back and to the right, place the junction box, trace its shape in that position and cut out the shape drilling into the outline and then applying a jig-saw to complete the process. Insert the wire through the hole and pass into the junction box, then with screws secure in place and put l a receptacle in place. Verify that power is running by turning on. This is the hardest part completed. Remove wall hanger plate that's attached behind microwave. The distance between cabinet and top of stove should be 30", mark the center and run a plumb line to it.
Position the plate on the wall and attach it, making sure that a wall stud is hit at least once by a screw. If there no studs, then make use of toggle bolts. The next thing to do is either put in the duct work to vent to the outside or, in the microwave, turn the blower fan to recirculate the air. Transfer the bolt holes pattern on microwave to cabinet bottom. If there is a recess at bottom of cabinets, you will have to use filler blocks where the microwave bolts are located. Drill the holes for the bolts. You will need a hole in the bottom at the back right of the cabinet for the microwave plug, so drill a hole about 1 1/2 inches at that point. Make sure that it is level, plug in the microwave and program. Now your microwave installed and you can enjoy its convenience. |
